Description
31 Churchgate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with a flat above. The building has a 16th-century interior, was raised and fronted in the early 19th century, and has a 17th-century rear extension. It is timber-framed with old roughcast render and features a slate roof with wide plain eaves soffit.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar, with a two-window range displaying 16-pane sashes in heavy, slightly projecting cased frames on the upper storeys. The shop front, dating from the late 19th century, has a central entry and windows divided into three lights by slender moulded wooden bars, with panelled bases. A wide 17th-century rear gable is shared with No. 30.
Inside, the cellar is linked with and similar to that under No. 30, lined with re-used squared stone blocks mixed with some rubble stone and flint. A later extension below the road cuts through the front stone walling and features semicircular vaulting. The ground storey beams are boxed in, except for some studs in the rear wall where infill has been removed, indicating that the front was originally jettied. There are long rear extensions of various dates, but they do not have any visible features of interest.
