Description
28 Churchgate Street is a shop with living accommodation above, originally two houses. It is dated 1835 on the front but has a core that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The building features timber-framed and rendered sides and rear, with a white brick front and a slate roof that has paired bracketed eaves soffits.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar, with a five-window range. All windows are 12-pane sashes set in deep reveals, featuring projecting stucco cornices on stub brackets. Raised stucco bands run at sill level on both upper storeys. The brick front was added to an earlier house, while the rear includes a double-gabled 17th-century wing. A Regency extension features a large two-storey semicircular flat-roofed bay, which has a continuous range of three 12-pane sash windows with cased frames and a heavy moulded cornice.
The front range replaces a 16th-century timber-framed house, part of which still exists in the adjoining property at No.29. There are no original features visible on the ground storey.
