Description
No. 2 King Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early 18th century and underwent significant restoration around 1980. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, a plinth, and rusticated quoins. It features a plain tile roof that is hipped at the north corner, with stone-coped gables on moulded stone kneelers on the south and west sides, along with brick end stacks and one brick ridge stack.
The structure is three storeys high and has an L-plan layout, with three bays on the east front and five bays overall. The east front includes a pilastered doorcase with a plain lintel, a drip mould, and a 20th-century door to the north. To the south, there is a large 19th-century shop window with glazing bars and a central flush mullioned and transomed two-light window. Above this, there are three similar windows, and above those, three two-light flush mullion windows.
The north front mirrors this design, featuring a pilastered doorcase to the west, another 19th-century shop window to the east, and three central mullioned and transomed two-light windows. There are five similar windows above and five two-light flush mullioned windows above that. All the windows are either fixed or casement types with horizontal glazing bars. The mullioned and transomed windows are 20th-century additions. The attic windows have also been replaced in the 20th century but are designed to match the original 18th-century style. The interior of the building has been gutted, with the exception of the ceiling beams.
