Description
The George Hotel is a hotel built in the early 19th century, with a late 19th-century addition. It features painted red brick with stucco dressings and a slate roof that is hipped to the southeast, along with a large brick gable and ridge stacks, and a stepped eaves band. The building has three storeys and three bays, plus a late 19th-century two-storey, three-bay wing to the north.
On the Chesterfield Road elevation, there is a central, stepped semicircular-headed doorcase with a panelled door and a traceried fanlight, flanked by glazing bar sash windows. Above this, there are three similar sash windows, and above again, three smaller sash windows. The later wing to the north has plain sash windows beneath stone lintels.
The Church Street elevation to the south features two glazing bar sash windows to the east and a wide opening to the west, which includes both a late 19th-century door and a glazing bar sash window. Above this, there are three glazing bar sash windows, and above again, three similar sash windows. All the glazing bar sash windows are situated below flat arches with incised voussoirs and have projecting cills.
