Description
The war memorial and railings in Alfreton's Market Place were built around 1927. Constructed from ashlar and bronze, the memorial features a wide square base surrounded by railings. The railings are supported by bulbous shaped posts connected by chain links. The memorial has a panelled base with a moulded plinth and a tall square pier topped with bronze plaques on three sides. The west and east sides of the memorial have low ramped buttresses that support the base and extend a short way up the pier, with ramped tops displaying carved decoration. Carved shields set in cartouches are found near the top of all sides of the pier except the south side, which features a laurel leaf circle above the plaque. Atop the pier is a bronze statue of a soldier holding a gun in one hand and with his other arm around the shoulder of a young girl. The base of the statue is inscribed with 'W A 1927'.
