Description
No. 1 Athenaeum Lane is a shop dating from the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast rendering and a mansard roof that has a modillion eaves cornice. The lower slope and the half hip on the south side are slated, while the rest of the roof is covered with pantiles.
The building has two storeys and attics. On the upper storey, there are two late-19th century sash windows with a single vertical bar to the lights, set in flush cased frames. The ground storey has a tripartite late-19th century sash window with diminished side lights, also in a flush cased frame. In the south wall of the attic, there is a 2-light casement window featuring arched Gothick heads with intersecting tracery. On the east side, a dormer with a lead-covered segmental-arched roof contains a 2-light small-paned casement window. The entrance door, located on the left, has six moulded sunk panels, with the top two being glazed. Due to settlement, the door frame is skewed. The interior has not been inspected.
