Description
No. 2 Angel Hill is a house that later became The St Edmund's Hotel and was incorporated into the Angel Hotel in 1963. It was built around 1814, as noted in a rate book entry, on an earlier site. The building is constructed of white brick and has a slate roof.
It stands three storeys tall and features a five-window range. The first and second storeys have small-paned sash windows set in deep reveals, while the ground storey has sashes without glazing bars. A continuous brick band runs between the first and second storeys, topped by a stone torus-moulded band. At the first-storey level, there is a continuous cast-iron balcony with Greek key ornamentation on the railings. The entrance door is framed by a Greek Ionic surround, which includes plain columns and a heavy entablature.
Inside, the principal upper room boasts a fine original fireplace surround. This features small free-standing Greek Ionic columns that support the projecting ends of a dentilled lintel, which is adorned with applied motifs, including roundels and swags. This fireplace is identical in style to another located on the upper floor of the Market Cross.
