Description
Crescent House (Number 28) is a building located on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 19th century. It features a white brick exterior with a slate roof and stands three storeys high with cellars. The building has a panelled parapet topped with a moulded stucco cornice, which is higher in the center and has a heavy stucco surround framing a sunk panel. Below the second storey windows, there is a plain raised stucco band.
The facade has eight windows arranged in a pattern of 2:1:1:1:3, with the central and end sections slightly projecting forward. All windows are 12-pane sashes, with larger panes on the first storey where the windows extend to floor level, framed by heavy wooden architraves. A continuous cast-iron balcony runs along the first storey, featuring a scrolled balustrade. The shop windows for Nos 27 and part of 28 have vertical glazing bars and are topped by a row of small pierced cast-iron balusters. The southern part of No. 28 has rendered rustication on the ground storey walls, with two sash windows set in deep reveals. The upper sashes of these windows are small-paned, and below the sills, there are cast-iron grilles over the cellar openings, decorated with an ornate acanthus-leaf design.
Inside, there are changes in level on the upper storeys and indications of alterations, suggesting that the current uniform front was partially added onto earlier 18th-century buildings on the site. The front range at the south end appears to have been added around 1830. The interior features a narrow geometric staircase with stick balusters and a plain wreathed handrail, internal window shutters with sunk panels, and six-panelled doors. An ornate fireplace surround includes cast-iron panels decorated with honeysuckle motifs, similar to the external grilles.
