Description
The precinct wall to the north of the Abbey Gate in Bury St Edmunds is a significant structure dating from the 12th century, with alterations made in the 14th century following events in 1327. This wall runs along the east side of Angel Hill and is located northwest of the former Abbey of St Edmund. It is constructed primarily of flint, much of which is coursed, and features wide bays separated by worn shallow ashlar-faced buttresses. The bay closest to the Abbey Gate contains a mix of stone blocks and includes a small blocked rectangular window-opening, believed to be part of the earlier gate that was destroyed by townspeople in 1327. The wall is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
