Description

Scandinavia House is a shop with offices above, originally a shop and house, dating from the early 17th century but featuring a mainly 20th-century exterior in Georgian style. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a plaintile roof. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar.

The main range includes four small-paned sash windows in cased frames on the upper storey, along with two flat-headed dormers with lead cheeks. The gable facing Abbeygate Street slightly projects and features 19th-century shaped bargeboards, a small-paned sash window on the upper storey, and an attic window. A wing extending up Abbeygate Street has two similar sash windows on the upper storey and two dormers. This wing was formerly a separate property, No.30 Abbeygate Street, which had three storeys and attics. The current appearance is the result of extensive alterations made in the late 1960s, when Regency-style shop fronts were added to the ground storey of both ranges.

Inside, nothing is visible in the former No.30 Abbeygate Street. The range facing Angel Hill consists of five bays, with all partitions removed on the ground storey. On the upper storey, the bay at the south end has exposed framing, featuring widely spaced studs with short straight tension braces to the gable end, jowled main posts, and a main beam with a small chamfer and scroll stops, which is likely a replacement. There is a scarf joint in the wallplate with a very short splay, while the roof structure is hidden.
