Description
29 and 29A Abbeygate Street is a shop with store rooms and a flat above, which was formerly a house and shop. It has a core dating from the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with roughcast on the front and red brick at the rear, topped with slate roofs and a modillion eaves cornice.
The exterior features three storeys and cellars, with a two-window range displaying sashes without glazing bars in cased frames. There is a late 20th-century shop front. Inside, the cellars below the front range are lined with flint and brick and have heavy timber ceilings. They are divided into two by an original partition wall. The side walls are timber-framed, with fragmentary remains visible at ground level on the east side. The west wall has no framing exposed inside No. 29, but it also serves as part of the east side wall of the adjoining building, which features extensive wall paintings on its outer surface.
