Description
27 Abbeygate Street is a former house and shop, now used as offices. It dates from the 17th century but has a 19th-century facade and a late 20th-century shop front. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof featuring a moulded wooden eaves cornice. It has two storeys and a cellar. On the upper storey, there is one small-paned sash window in a cased frame.
Inside, the cellar, which is located beneath part of the front range, has been converted into a kitchen and features one large exposed main beam. The building consists of two ranges: the front range runs parallel to the street, while the rear range, which has been widened, is at right angles to it. The framing shows signs of wear, with some reused timbers, and the chimney stack has been removed. The roof over the front range was renewed in the 20th century, while the rear range has a 19th-century replacement roof with a shallower pitch on the east slope.
