Description
Sworders is an office building from the early 19th century located on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds. The structure is made of white brick and has a slate roof, standing three storeys tall. It features a raised stucco band at the plain parapet and has a two-window range with small-paned sash windows set in deep reveals. The windows have gauged brick heads and projecting stone sills, with 9 panes on the top storey and 12 panes on the first storey. The ground storey has a tripartite small-paned sash window with diminished side-lights, which is a 20th-century reproduction used as a display window. There is a continuous plain fascia with an entablature supported by solid moulded brackets. An Edwardian side door has four sunk panels with moulded surrounds and a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars.
At the rear, there is a narrow mid-19th century red brick extension that is three storeys high, featuring one window on each storey, all small-paned sashes in deep reveals with stone sills. Inside, the cellar beneath the front range is mainly walled in coursed kidney flint, while the area below the rear range is spacious with walls rendered over rubble stone, likely used originally as a kitchen, and includes a rear window, a blocked side window, and a fireplace. An original staircase with stick balusters, a curved handrail, and moulded newels rises the full height of the building. The first storey windows have panelled internal shutters.
