Description
No. 86 Guildhall Street is a building in Bury St Edmunds that consists of two houses, now used as offices on the ground and part of the first storeys. It dates from the early 19th century but has an earlier core. The structure is made of white brick and features slate roofs.
The building stands three storeys high and has cellars. The former No. 86, located on the left, has a plain parapet with a stone cornice and a three-window range with 12-pane sash windows in plain reveals, flat gauged arches, and stone sills. The ground storey has glazing bars only on the upper lights, and one window is set within a semicircular arched surround. There is a six-panel door in plain reveals with a shallow rectangular fanlight.
The former No. 87A has a two-window range with similar 12-pane sashes in plain reveals and flat gauged arches on the first storey. The ground storey features larger windows with glazing bars only in the top sashes. A late 20th-century addition on the second storey has slate-hanging above a heavy moulded cornice. The entrance door, a six-panel design, is located on the right in a slightly recessed section and has a semicircular arched stuccoed surround with plain reveals and a fanlight with intersecting glazing bars. There is no rear access to these premises.
Inside, the modernised cellar beneath the north end of the building has heavy chamfered cross-beams with run-off stops, while the ground storey features boxed main beams and panelled internal shutters on the windows at the south end.
