Description

No. 84 Guildhall Street is a pair of houses from the early 19th century that have been combined and are currently used as offices. The front is made of white brick, while the back wall features random flint with red brick dressings. The building has a slate roof with a stone parapet and coping, along with a stone band below.

The structure has three storeys, attics, and cellars. It features a four-window range with 12-paned sash windows in plain reveals, which have flat gauged arches on the first and second storeys. The lower halves of the ground storey sashes have plain glass. A stone band runs below the window sills on the first storey and another at the impost level of the door and window arches. The first storey windows extend from floor to ceiling and open onto four small rounded cast-iron balconies. The ground storey includes a 20th-century shop window on the left and a doorway on the right with a segmental-arched brick surround, flanked by Tuscan columns and panelled pilasters, topped with a fanlight featuring radiating glazing bars. The door has six sunk panels and is accessed by stone steps. There are also good rainwater heads at each end of the facade.

On the back wall, there are 16-pane sash windows in flush cased frames on the ground and first storeys, along with a mid-19th century red brick wing.

Inside, the two halves of the house are still quite distinct, each having a brick-lined cellar with the remains of a fireplace on the right. There are winder stairs on each side with stick balusters, open bracketed strings, and wreathed handrails. The front windows have panelled inside shutters, and several fireplaces feature reeded surrounds. The attics are unaltered and consist of two parallel ranges with a valley roof between.
