Description
85 and 85A Whiting Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a tiled roof that features a plain parapet.
The exterior consists of two storeys, a cellar, and formerly had attics. There are four windows, which are sashes with a single vertical glazing bar set in flush cased frames. On the ground floor, there is a three-light window on the right that does not have glazing bars. The building also has two gabled 19th-century dormers. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a blank fanlight, framed by an arched wooden doorcase that has panelled reveals, panelled pilasters, and an open dentil pediment. To the far left, there is a second door with a plain doorcase and reveals that leads to No.85A on the upper storey.
The interior was extensively restored in 1970, making it difficult to identify any 18th-century or earlier features. The cellar walls have been rebricked, while the front slope of the roof remains original, featuring a very plain late clasped purlin form.
