Description

No. 86 Whiting Street is a house that has been converted into consulting rooms and offices. It dates from the 17th century, with a late 18th-century front featuring a parapet and cornice with paired mutules. The building has a plaintiled roof and a large internal chimney stack with a plain rectangular red brick shaft.

The exterior consists of two storeys, a cellar, and attics, with a three-window range of sashes that have a single vertical glazing bar in flush cased frames. There are two flat-headed dormers and a six-panel door with a plain rectangular fanlight, framed by a wood doorcase with a cornice supported on enriched console brackets.

Inside, the cellar runs beneath the entire front range and is primarily constructed of rubble flint and old render, featuring a vaulted brick arch at one end and stone blocks in the north end wall. The timber frame is arranged in four bays, with the main components exposed on the first storey, including main posts with long jowls and a cambered tie-beam at the south end, which may relate to the adjoining house. The remaining tie-beams are stop-chamfered with curved stops.

At the rear, there is a three-storey 19th-century extension made of painted brick with a pitched slate roof. This section has a two-window range, featuring 12-pane sashes on the first storey with segmental-arched heads and deep reveals, along with 19th-century casement windows in flush frames on the second storey. An end chimney stack on the north side has a plain rectangular red brick shaft. The front and rear ranges are connected by an early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters, wreathed handrails, and column newels, which splits into two flights at the half landing.
