Description

89 Whiting Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 17th century and early 19th century, featuring a timber-framed core with a brick front that is now painted. The building has a plaintiled roof and stands two storeys tall, with a cellar and attics. The front facade consists of three-and-a-half bays and includes a large internal chimney stack.

There are three windows on the upper floor, which are 12-pane sashes set in flush cased frames. The ground floor features two early 19th-century shop windows with glazing bars, plain pilasters, and cornices. Above, there are three flat-headed dormers; two have 2-light single bar casements, while the one on the left has a small-paned sliding sash window. The central door, which is from the 20th century, is glazed and set within an early 19th-century doorcase that includes narrow reeded pilasters and a shallow cornice.

Inside, the cellar located beneath the right half of the front has walls made of flint rubble and brick, which are rendered. It features a heavy supporting timber ceiling with joists set flat. This space has served as a bakehouse and brewhouse, and it includes a large timber lintel over a former fireplace, which has been partly infilled by a later copper. On the ground floor, the chimney stack has been tunnelled through for access to the rear. To the left of the entry, there is a fragment of a timber partition wall, while the remaining timbers are concealed or boxed in. On the first storey, there are remnants of a large timber lintel on the right side of the stack, along with two boxed-in main beams that do not relate to the stack's position. To the left of the stack, the floor level is lower, revealing main posts and a tie-beam. The roof timbers are all covered.
