Description
No. 57 Abbeygate Street is a Grade II listed building located in Bury St Edmunds. It includes Nos. 90, 91, and 92 Whiting Street. Originally built as a house and shop, it has a fragmentary core from the 17th century and an exterior from the 18th century, with significant restoration completed in 1969. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a 20th-century plaintiled roof featuring twin gables facing Abbeygate Street.
The exterior consists of two storeys with attics, positioned on a corner site with a return front to Whiting Street. The Abbeygate Street side has a three-window range with sash windows that have glazing bars only on the upper sashes, set in flush cased frames. The Whiting Street front has a five-window range, all featuring small-paned sashes in flush cased frames, along with two flat-headed dormers and late 20th-century shop fronts. The building is finished with a modillion eaves cornice.
Inside, there are no exposed original features, but part of the cellar contains some flint rubble and arches made of Tudor brick.
