Description
The Nutshell Public House is a mid-19th century public house located in Bury St Edmunds. It features a timber-framed and rendered structure with a slate roof and a wide plain eaves cornice. The building has three storeys and a cellar, with two windows on each storey facing The Traverse and one window on each storey of the return front to the south. All windows are sashes in flush cased frames, with 12 panes on the first storey and 9 panes on the second storey. The corner of the building is rounded, and the ground storey has a mullioned shop front that wraps around both sides, supported by pilasters and a frieze, topped with a cornice and ornate cast-iron cresting. Inside, there is a single room on each storey, and there is no evidence of an earlier core. This establishment is claimed to be the smallest public house in England.
