Description
No. 60 Abbeygate Street is a former bank, now used as offices, built in 1868 by John Gibson. It features a fine facade made of ashlared Ancaster stone with a base of Portland stone and has a parapeted roof. The building is three storeys high and consists of five bays, showcasing a High Victorian Italianate style. The ground floor is rusticated and has five openings separated by piers, each topped with keystoned flat arches. Although all windows have been replaced, the original openings remain intact. The first and second floors each have five original plate glass sash windows set in deep reveals, surrounded by moulded raised architrave surrounds. The first floor includes a criss-cross string course, while the second floor features fluted and foliated plat-bands. The second floor architraves are adorned with ornate keystones, and the projecting cornice is detailed with mutules, roundels, and dentils, all designed with bold and varied scales. The interior has not been inspected.
