Description
59 Abbeygate Street is an office building constructed in 1891 by JS Corder of Ipswich, originally for the Alliance Insurance Company Limited. The ground floor features red sandstone, while the upper floors are made of red brick with terracotta and rubbed brick dressings. The architectural style is Neo-Jacobethan, with influences from Artisan Mannerist and Late-Gothic design.
The building has three storeys and five bays arranged in an alternating pattern, with two gables and canted bows. The ground floor includes original bank windows in cut stone surrounds, tripartite casements with doubled upper lights, and an additional single-light casement on the west side. There is a 4-centred door with upper lights on the east side, and a central segmental-arched doorcase flanked by Doric pilasters, topped with a bracketed pediment featuring scrolls and a cornice supported by volutes.
A finely detailed frieze below the window bases showcases strapwork, fruit, foliage, and coats of arms. The upper floors have two three-sided canted bows with central cross windows, single side lights, and upper lights under 4-centred arches, with the central mullion of the first-floor bows removed. The first floor features a dentil cornice and flat foliage panels above, while the second floor has egg-and-dart moulding and a projecting cornice framing Dutch gables with scrolled pedimented centrepieces and coats of arms. An unusual balustrade is present between the Dutch gables and is repeated above the west-facing gable on the party wall with the adjacent property. The roofs are plaintiled, and there is a plain gable at the rear. The building is noted for its high-quality details. The interior has not been inspected.
