Description

Numbers 8 and 9 Guildhall Street is a house that has been divided into two shops and offices. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of white brick with a plain parapet and a slate roof. The building has three storeys and a cellar, featuring a five-window range. All windows are sashes, with 12 panes on the first storey and 9 panes on the second storey, one of which is blocked. The windows have plain reveals and flat gauged arches. The ground storey has two 20th-century restored shop fronts: No. 8 is divided into four lights by vertical glazing bars, while No. 9 has a 21-pane front. There are also two six-panel doors with pilastered wood doorcases and cornices.

Inside, No. 8 was extensively modernised in the 1980s, incorporating several reused timbers on the ground floor. On the first floor, two main posts that appear to be original remain, one featuring the housing for a brace and the other for a window sill. The second storey is an early 19th-century addition. No. 9 includes a partly brick vaulted 16th-century cellar with two niches in each side wall. The ground storey has very large main beams exposed, while the first storey has exposed timbers along the north wall. The ceiling has been raised, and one tie-beam has been moved. Originally, there was a division into two rooms on each storey, but the partition wall on the ground storey has been removed, exposing the studding without infill above. The rear of the building features an altered clasped side purlin roof.
