Description
87 Whiting Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It has a core dating from the 17th century, an early 19th-century front, and 20th-century extensions at the rear. The building is timber-framed and later encased in painted brick, topped with a tiled roof that features a plain eaves soffit. The basic layout includes a main range and a cross-wing.
The exterior is two storeys high with attics in part and cellars. It has three windows, which are sashes with vertical glazing bars set in plain reveals. On the ground floor, there is a small-paned 20th-century bowed shop window on the right, framed by an early 19th-century surround with reeded pilasters. The building features four flat-headed dormers with sash windows that also have vertical glazing bars. A recessed entrance doorway includes a segmental fanlight with radial glazing bars and is flanked by columns in antis. At the rear, the cross-wing has a canted bay that rises two storeys, with three small-paned sash windows on each storey.
Inside, there are extensive cellars beneath both the front and rear ranges, showcasing a variety of wall materials including rubble flint, old brick, and render, along with sections of re-used stone. A part of the front wall contains a section of stone that appears to have once been a doorway leading to the street, while an adjacent area is brick-vaulted with walls made of alternating courses of knapped flint and tile-like bricks. The ground floor lacks notable features, but the upper storey reveals dadoes made of re-used Jacobean panelling, and some main components of the cross-wing frame are visible. The rear upper room of the wing has a raised and coved ceiling, and the rafters along the front of the roof have been renewed. A fine staircase features turned balusters, panelled dadoes, square-headed column newels, and a moulded handrail.
