Description
No. 84 Whiting Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 16th century, with later extensions and an 18th-century front. The building is timber-framed and has roughcast rendering, topped with a 20th-century plaintiled roof featuring a paired modillion eaves soffit.
The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars. The first storey has five 12-pane sash windows, while the second storey features 6-pane sashes. The ground storey windows have plain lower sashes made of ground glass, and all windows have flush cased frames. There is a central doorcase with deep reveals, a shouldered architrave, and a pediment, leading to a 20th-century fully glazed small-paned door.
Inside, the entire structure is timber framed, but the front range has significant late Georgian features, including boxed-in beams, six-panel doors, and panelled internal shutters. There are two rear chimney-stacks flanked by alcoves. The top storey is an early 19th-century addition, featuring a typical upper stair with stick balusters, rounded newels, and a curved handrail. Part of the timber frame is visible on the first storey behind a chimney-stack. The south wall serves as a shared partition with the adjoining house, where the studding is exposed. On the ground storey, this wall is covered with extensive early 16th-century wall paintings. A small-paned sliding sash window in the original upper wall overlooks a 19th-century stair that connects to a rear extension. A 16th-century wing extends from part of the rear and includes a two-bay ground storey room with an ogee-moulded main beam and cross-beam.
