Description

10 and 10B Whiting Street is a house that now has a shop on the ground floor and a flat above. It dates from the 15th or 16th century, with a front added in the 18th century. The building is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a 20th-century tiled roof featuring mutule eaves soffit.

The exterior has two storeys and three irregularly spaced windows on the upper floor, all 16-pane sashes in flush cased frames. To the right of the central entrance door are three similar windows, while the left side features a small-paned shop window with a moulded projecting frieze and cornice. The doorcase includes panelled pilasters and an open pediment, leading to a 20th-century small-paned fully glazed door. There is a carriage entrance at the south end of the front, revealing a small section of framing on the north side wall. At the rear, there are three gabled wings, with the right wing displaying a side jetty and exposed joist ends.

Inside, the front range consists of three bays with the partition walls removed. On the left side, the main beam is boxed in, and there is a moulded plaster cornice. On the right side, the main beam features a very wide chamfer and broach stops. An internal chimney stack at the rear of the left end connects to the jettied rear wing, which has a heavy timber ceiling on the ground floor and remnants of a fireplace with a timber lintel. The upper flat has not been inspected.
