Description

The Masons Arms Public House is a public house dating from the early 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is faced with alternating sections of plain and fluted 19th-century weatherboarding, topped by a shallow pitched roof made of asbestos slates. The building has two storeys and cellars, and it was originally designed with a hall range and two cross-wings.

On the exterior, there are four windows on the first storey, which are 12-pane sash windows set in flush cased frames. The ground storey has three windows: two tripartite sashes and one plain sash, each with a single vertical glazing bar in the main lights. The doorway is adorned with a moulded architrave and cornice. At the rear, there is a rendered cross-wing.

Inside, the cellar is lined with brick. On the ground storey, the ceiling timbers are exposed in the central two bays of the former hall, featuring chamfered main cross-beams with curved stepped stops and unchamfered joists set flat. The south end cross-wing has very heavy studding along its north wall, with the infill removed, and the centre section is butted against it, consisting of a main beam and middle rail. The rear of this wing now forms part of the back premises of the adjoining No. 15. The north wing has only the main beams exposed, and there is no timbering visible on the upper storey.
