Description
16 Whiting Street is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century. It is built of white brick and features a parapet and stone cornice, topped with a slate roof. The building has three storeys and a cellar, with a two-window range facing Whiting Street and one window facing Churchgate Street. The first storey has 12-pane sash windows, while the second storey has 6-pane sash windows, all set in plain reveals with flat gauged arches. There is a raised stucco band below the first storey windows. The corner of the building is slightly recessed, with blank windows on the upper storeys. The original entrance door on Whiting Street, which had a semicircular brick arch and a fanlight with fan glazing, has been converted into a window. A 20th-century shop entrance on the corner is designed in a traditional style, featuring small-paned shop windows on each frontage and a heavy fascia. The interior includes a cellar with walling made of flint, brick, re-used stone, and old render, which predates the structure above. The upper floors do not display any visible features from before the early 19th century.
