Description

74 Whiting Street is a restaurant that was originally two houses and a shop, dating from the 18th century, with a 19th-century front. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof that features a wide plain eaves soffit. It stands three storeys tall on a corner site. The Whiting Street side has three windows, while the Churchgate Street side has one window, all of which are sashes with a single vertical bar in flush cased frames. There are two doorways on Whiting Street, each with moulded architraves and cornices; the former door to No. 74 has been blocked. The corner shop entrance includes a four-light shop window on each side, complemented by a heavy continuous fascia, cornice, and plain pilasters. Inside, there is a cellar beneath the former No. 75, featuring walls made of flint, brick, and stone with old render, and a timber ceiling. On the ground floor, the main beams are plain and small, with joists on edge exposed in the two northern bays.
