Description

15 Guildhall Street is a house and shop, now entirely used as shop premises, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is built of white brick, painted, with a slate roof and plain eaves soffit, situated on a corner site.

The exterior features two storeys, with a three-window range facing Churchgate Street and one window facing Guildhall Street, all of which are 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals. There are two shop windows on the Churchgate Street side designed in an early 19th-century style, complete with pilasters and cornices. The entrance door has six sunk panels and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, framed by a semicircular brick surround. A similar shop window is present on the Guildhall Street front. The splayed corner has a blank window above and a wide entrance doorway, also with a fanlight featuring radiating glazing bars and a segmental brick surround.

The building now includes the former No. 16, which has a mid-19th-century brick front with a plain parapet, possibly concealing a 17th-century timber-framed core. It has a plaintiled roof and remnants of an end chimney stack on the north side. This section has two storeys with two windows on the upper storey, which are sashes with a single vertical glazing bar in plain reveals. The double shopfront, which used to have a central entrance, now has the door replaced by a narrower window, and a plain fascia with ornate blind boxes remains.

Inside, there are no features prior to the early 19th century in No. 15. The interior of the former No. 16 has been mainly gutted, with the roof renewed. The main beam on the ground storey is a 20th-century addition. The gable wall on the south side is the end wall of No. 17, revealing substantial studding. This building is part of a significant group in Guildhall Street and is included for its group value.
