Description
BURY ST EDMUNDS
TL8564SW GUILDHALL STREET 639-1/14/401 (West side) 07/08/52 Nos.78 AND 78A
GV II
House, now divided into 2 and containing flats. C16. Timber-framed; jettied along street frontage; slate roof with a plain wood eaves soffit. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attics and cellar. 3 window range: irregularly spaced 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames. 3 similarly spaced but slightly longer 12-pane sashes to the ground storey. 2 flat-headed dormers with small-paned C20 windows. 2 doors, to No.78 6-panel in a plain wood architrave with a rectangular fanlight with lattice glazing bars and to No.78A 4-panel with a plain surround and rectangular fanlight. The joist ends of the jetty are covered by a plain fascia board. INTERIOR: cellar below both halves of house is approached from No.78: it has elliptical barrel-vaulted ceilings of narrow red bricks; walls part rubble. On the interior of No.78 the timber-framed core is overlaid by major C19 alterations. A rear ground storey room has a much altered open fireplace with only the lintel exposed. A mid-C18 stair balustrade and 4-panelled doors to the upper storey. No.78A has one room on each storey and a C20 rear extension which is probably a replacement of an earlier range. The main ceiling beam on the ground storey is boxed in; the corresponding beam on the 1st storey has a double ogee moulding. No access to the roof.
