Description

78 and 78A Guildhall Street is a house from the 16th century that has been divided into two flats. It features a timber-framed structure with a jettied front and a slate roof with a simple wooden eaves soffit. The building is two storeys high, with attics and a cellar. The front has three windows on the upper floor, which are irregularly spaced 12-pane sash windows in flush cased frames, and three slightly longer 12-pane sashes on the ground floor. There are two flat-headed dormers with small-paned 20th-century windows. The entrances include a six-panel door for No.78 with a plain wood architrave and a rectangular fanlight with lattice glazing bars, and a four-panel door for No.78A with a plain surround and rectangular fanlight. The ends of the jetty are covered by a plain fascia board.

Inside, the cellar, accessible from No.78, has elliptical barrel-vaulted ceilings made of narrow red bricks and part rubble walls. No.78 has undergone significant 19th-century alterations, with the timber-framed core still visible. A rear ground floor room features a much-altered open fireplace, with only the lintel remaining. There is a mid-18th-century stair balustrade and four-panel doors on the upper floor. No.78A has one room on each storey and a 20th-century rear extension, likely replacing an earlier structure. The main ceiling beam on the ground floor is boxed in, while the corresponding beam on the first floor has a double ogee moulding. Access to the roof is not available.
