Description

No. 13 Garland Street is a house with a core dating back to the 16th century, featuring alterations and extensions from the mid-19th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with concrete plaintiles. The building stands two storeys high with a cellar. The front has a two-window range, showcasing 6-pane sashes with vertical glazing bars in flush cased frames. On the ground floor, there is a tripartite sash with vertical glazing bars on the left and a pair of plank garage doors on the right. The central entrance door consists of six raised fielded panels and is framed by a plain wood surround. A heavy timber band above the ground storey indicates the possibility of an underbuilt jetty.

During the rebuilding of No. 14 in 1965, elements of the end wall on the right, including a main post and a middle rail, were uncovered and photographed; this wall was subsequently rebuilt in brick. The 19th-century rear extension has a roof slope that integrates with the main roof and does not contain upper rooms.

Inside, the cellar, which is not easily accessible, is reported to be brick vaulted. The front room on the ground floor features a boxed-in beam and a later partition wall that separates the garage area. An internal chimney stack, shared with No. 12, has a rebuilt fireplace with a timber lintel that is covered. On the upper storey, the front wall has been raised, while the rear wall retains its original height, creating a steep pitch to the roof slope. The rear wall plate and the tie beam in the partition wall with No. 12 are both visible.
