Description

19 and 20 Eastgate Street is a house, now divided into two, dating from the mid to late 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with an old plaintile roof. The building has two storeys and attics, arranged in two bays with a chimney bay, and it jetties at the front. The internal chimney stack has a plain rectangular red brick shaft.

The exterior includes a two-window range with 2-light casements that have a single glazing bar in flush frames on the first storey. There are two flat-headed dormers: No.19 has old 2-light casements, while No.20 features 20th-century standard casements. On the ground floor, No.19 has a 20th-century double shop front, and No.20 has a sash window with a single vertical glazing bar in a flush cased frame. There is also an end entrance door in a plain wood doorcase.

The interior of No.20 has good exposed timbering throughout. On the ground floor, it features an ovolo-moulded main beam and flat-set joists with lamb's tongue stops. The main beam is jointed into an older cross-beam in the east wall, which has roll moulding and leaf stops. The front wall retains the remains of an original mullion-and-transom window with smaller side lights, and only one 3-light side window survives with ovolo-moulded mullions. A similar window on the upper storey has both side lights intact. The chimney stack is made of 16th-century red brick with old mortar, and there is a plain timber lintel. The upper ceiling may be original, and the attic roof has clasped purlins, cambered collars, and exposed upper rafters.
