Description
Nos. 13 and 14 on Eastgate Street in Bury St Edmunds are two houses that date from the early to mid 17th century, with a 19th-century extension at the rear. The buildings are timber-framed, with roughcast on No. 13 and plain render on No. 14, both featuring old plain tiles on the roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys and attics. No. 13 has a single sash window on each storey; the first-floor window has no glazing bars and is set in a moulded flush cased frame, while the ground-floor window is a wider former shop window divided into three lights by vertical glazing bars, also in a heavy moulded flush frame. There is a flat-headed dormer with rendered cheeks that contains a 20th-century two-light plain casement window. The entrance features a six-panel door in a plain wood surround.
No. 14 has a single sash window on each storey, both with a single vertical glazing bar in a flush cased frame. It also has a small segmental-headed lead-covered dormer with a plain swivel window. The front door is a four-panel design, with the top two panels glazed, set in a plain wood surround.
Inside, No. 13 has plain main beams, wall plates, and middle rails exposed, although the roof timbers have been renewed. No. 14 features an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel on the rear wall, and while few timbers are uncovered, the rafters are said to be exposed in the attic.
