Description
No. 25 Eastgate Street is a shop premises that was formerly part of a house. It dates from the early 17th century and has 19th-century alterations. The building is timber-framed and roughcast rendered, with concrete plaintiles and a jettied front. It represents the surviving bay of a three-cell house, with a small extension on the west side.
The exterior features two storeys, with one sash window on the upper storey that has a single vertical glazing bar in a flush cased frame. The ground storey has a small 19th-century shop front with glazing bars. There is also one flat-headed dormer in the roof and a boarded and slatted door at the east end that leads to a passageway towards the rear. Various 19th-century extensions are present at the back.
Inside, the main ceiling beams have chamfer and lamb's tongue stops. There are remains of a diamond mullioned window in the rear wall on the first storey. The end wall on the east has been rebuilt in brick, and the original end wall on the west has been removed on both storeys to accommodate a small extension. There is no evidence of original heating, although this area seems to have been the parlour end of the house. The roof is inaccessible.
