Description
Nos. 2 and 3 Barn Lane are a pair of cottages that were originally one building, dating from the 16th century. They are timber-framed and rendered, with a brick rear wall and plaintiled roofs. The cottages feature an internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft.
The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with a total of four windows: three 9-pane sash windows and one 6-pane casement window, all set in flush cased frames on the first storey, and three sashes with a single vertical glazing bar on the ground storey. There are two doors with plain wood surrounds, with No. 2 featuring a flat cornice hood.
Inside, there are no cellars. The timber frame is composed of four bays, with part of a fifth bay on the south side, which now forms part of the adjoining house. The ground storey has plain and very heavy main beams, although the joists have been replaced, and the main posts are jowled. There is no evidence of original partition walls on either storey, suggesting that the building may have initially served as a workshop or store rather than a residence. The internal chimney-stack is a later addition, and only side purlins are visible in the attics. It is noted that No. 3 suffered fire damage about 20 years ago, and both roofs may have been replaced.
