Description

Nos. 93, 94, and 95 on Eastgate Street in Bury St Edmunds are a row of three houses dating from the late 17th century, with 19th-century front facades. The buildings are timber-framed and rendered, with Nos. 94 and 95 featuring roughcast finishes and roofs covered in Roman tiles.

The houses are two storeys tall and do not have cellars, although they are built on a high foundation. Each house has one end chimney stack and one internal chimney stack, both with plain red brick shafts. No. 93 has two windows on each storey, all small-paned 2-light casements set in flush frames. No. 94 features a single window on each storey, with sashes that have a single vertical glazing bar in a flush cased frame. No. 95 has one 2-light casement window with a single bar on the first storey and a sliding sash window on the ground storey. The entrance doors, which are replacements from the 20th century, are accessed by steps and are set in plain reveals.

Inside No. 94, which was originally one house with No. 95, there are few exposed timbers. Notable features include a small main beam set on edge, the remains of a plain timber lintel, and both wall plates in the front wall, which have an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint. The dividing wall with No. 93 is constructed of lath and plaster.
