Description

37, 38, and 39 Eastgate Street is a row of three houses that were originally one building, dating from the early 18th century with 19th-century alterations. The houses are timber-framed and faced in red brick with white brick dressings. Nos. 37 and 38 have old plain tiles on the roof, while No. 39 is covered with slates.

The exterior features two storeys and attics. The 19th-century red brick front has vertical bands of white brick that are irregularly spaced, outlining the doors and windows. There are two end chimneys in the brick gable ends and one internal stack, all with plain rectangular red brick shafts. The upper storey contains four sash windows with a single vertical glazing bar in flush cased frames, along with one similar single-light window. The ground storey has four larger sash windows with segmental-arched heads to the frames and surrounds.

There are three dormers: Nos. 37 and 38 have gabled dormers, while No. 39 has a flat, lead-covered dormer, all featuring two-light casement windows. The doors are slightly recessed and accessed by steps, with panelled architraves and triangular pediments supported on small shaped brackets.

Inside, there are no cellars, and the beams are mainly boxed. The fireplaces have been modernised. In No. 39, the upper beams feature a small chamfer and curved stops.
