Description
85 and 86 Eastgate Street are a pair of houses, likely originally built as one, dating from the mid-17th century with alterations from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The houses are timber-framed and rendered above a high brick and flint plinth, with a roof covered in 20th-century Roman tiles.
The exterior features two storeys, with a cellar present only in No.85. There are two end chimney stacks and one internal chimney stack, each with a plain red brick shaft. Each storey has four windows that are irregularly spaced: the first storey has small-paned sliding sashes, while the ground storey has 12-pane sashes, all set in flush cased frames. The entrance consists of two six-panel doors, each accessed by a flight of steps with wooden handrails. Additionally, No.85 has a door set within the plinth.
Inside No.85, the cellar, which is only partially below ground, was previously used as a stable and has walls made of rough flint and reused stone. The building's frame consists of three bays. There is one roughly chamfered ceiling beam in the ground storey with scroll stops, while the rest of the beams are boxed. The internal stack is made of 17th-century brick and features an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel, along with remnants of a bread oven. On the upper storey, the dividing tie-beam has had its studding replaced, and there is a long shutter slide in the front wallplate. The roof, which appears to have been replaced in the 18th century, consists of four bays with clasped purlins, deep straight collars, and a ridge piece. The rafters are thin and set on edge, some of which are reused and show signs of smoke blackening.
