Description
14 Guildhall Street is a house that dates from the 16th century and the 19th century. It features a timber frame in part, with a red brick wall on the north side and render on the south, while the front is roughcast. The roof is slate.
The building has two and three storeys and includes a cellar, divided into two separate halves. On the right side, there is one tripartite sash window without glazing bars on each storey, topped by a shallow moulded and rendered triangular pediment that rises above the eaves. On the left side, there is one sash window on each storey, which are of graduating sizes, all featuring a single vertical glazing bar. Additionally, there is a narrow sash window without glazing bars on the splayed northern corner, also on each storey. The entrance door is a two-panelled design with a wooden doorcase that has plain reveals, panelled pilasters, and an open pediment supported by enriched console brackets.
At the rear, the northern half of the house has a gable with random brick walling. Inside, the cellar has two levels: the right side has brick walls and is higher, while the left side features flint and stone walling with a timber ceiling. The northern half of the house forms a three-bay wing that is at right angles to the street. The main ceiling beams on the ground storey are exposed and have a double ogee mould with run-off stops. No part of the frame is visible above the ground storey, and the top storey is an addition from the same period as the southern half of the house, which lacks internal features prior to the 19th century. Both the ground and first storey rooms in this section have decorative plaster cornices and friezes with egg-and-dart ornament and repetitive flower and leaf motifs.
