Description

No. 76 on Guildhall Street is a house built in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame covered in stucco and has a slate roof with a simple wooden eaves soffit. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a three-window arrangement on the front. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in moulded flush cased frames, except for the central upper window, which is blocked. There is a six-panel door accessed by three steps, located in a semicircular-headed arched doorway. The doorway has plain reveals and a moulded door surround decorated with a Greek key pattern on the architrave, along with a large rectangular fanlight divided into six panes by glazing bars.

At the rear, there is a long two-storey range on the north side, which is roughcast rendered over timber framing on the ground floor, with 19th-century red brick above. Part of this rear range is separated off as a different house, No. 76A. Inside, the house has extensive cellars that are brick-lined with vaulted ceilings beneath the front section. At the back, there is a long, very rough brick-vaulted area with chalk walls that runs the length of the garden and features an open well at the far end. Most of the main rooms have moulded and decorated plaster cornices, and the internal window shutters have sunk panels. The staircase includes stick balusters, a ramped handrail, and bracketed open strings. Additionally, there is a single-storey red brick extension on the southwest side, which has a segmental curve to its wall and large 12-pane sash windows. Three bays of the north range are partly within No. 76, featuring stop-chamfered main beams with run-out stops.
