Description
No. 112 Northgate Street is a house dating from the early to mid 18th century, with some remodelling and a new front added in the 19th century. It is built of white brick and features a black glazed pantiled roof with wood mutule eaves soffit and a plain stucco cornice. The building stands two storeys high with a cellar and has a five-window range, displaying 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals with flat gauged arches. A moulded stucco band runs between the storeys.
On the ground floor, there is a wide projecting porch with a pediment, supported by pairs of square pillars and responding pilasters, and featuring a fluted architrave. The entrance door has six sunk panels and is flanked by two narrow 6-pane windows. The rear of the house has complex fenestration, including six 12-pane sash windows in flush cased frames and three wide full-length 12-pane tripartite sashes with diminished side lights and segmental-arched heads, one of which has boarded side lights. There are also three dormers in the rear slope of the roof, one of which is blank. At the north end, part of the ground floor wall is constructed of flint and red brick.
Inside, the cellar beneath the north side of the house consists of two linked brick-lined and vaulted ranges, one of which features a fine double row of numbered wine bins. The interior retains several notable 18th-century fireplaces with carved and eared architraves, particularly in the large rear upper drawing room, which also boasts an ornate moulded plaster ceiling centerpiece. The large entrance hall was remodelled in the early 19th century and includes a geometric staircase with a balustrade featuring stick balusters, a ramped and wreathed handrail, and open strings with fluted carving. The floor is paved with limestone flags, and the shallow-pitched attic roof has very large principal rafters.
