Description
Nos. 12 and 12A on Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds is a house from the early 19th century that has been divided into flats. The building features a white brick front with rendered sides and a slate roof, which has a wide paired mutule eaves soffit and fluted bargeboards. It has two internal cruciform chimney-stacks.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high. The front is divided by shallow brick pilasters and includes small two-storey wings with parapets on both the north and south sides. The central section has a three-window range, featuring 12-pane sash windows in plain reveals with flat gauged arches and stone sills on the first storey, and similar but larger windows on the ground storey. A raised brick band runs between the two storeys. Each wing has a single blank window on the upper storey, while the ground storey has a 12-pane sash window on the south side and a door with a plain rectangular fanlight on the north side. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a plain rectangular fanlight, set within a wood Doric doorcase that has a triglyph frieze and a modillion cornice. The interior has not been inspected.
