Description
115 and 116 Northgate Street are a pair of houses, likely originally built as one, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with a core that dates back to the 15th or 16th century. The front is made of white brick, with a rendered north gable and a slate roof consisting of two parallel ranges, featuring a wide modillion eaves soffit at the front.
The exterior has three storeys and cellars, with a four-window range, all of which are sash windows: the top storey has 12-pane windows in flush cased frames, while the others lack glazing bars and are set in shallow reveals with stone sills. There are raised stucco bands between the storeys. The entrances consist of two 6-panel doors with plain rectangular fanlights and wood doorcases; No. 115 has plain Tuscan pilasters and a cornice, while No. 116 features fluted engaged columns, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice. The rear wall is rendered and lined, with sash windows in flush cased frames: three on the second storey and five on the first storey, mostly 12-pane, with three having a single vertical glazing bar.
Inside, the division into two houses is irregular, with No. 116 being the larger. During restoration in 1991, a bay with heavy flat unchamfered joists was discovered in the entrance hall but is now covered. The timber frame extends into the adjoining bay, which has a boxed and moulded main beam. The remaining features in No. 116 are all from the early 19th century. A large drawing room, which used to have an adjoining ante-room, spans the entire back range on the first storey. The staircase includes moulded newels, stick balusters, and a ramped and wreathed handrail. The interior of No. 115 was not inspected.
