Description
Forest Cottage is a pair of houses dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations. The houses are constructed of brick with a gabled roof covered in renewed tiles, and brick ridge and end stacks. Each house has a central staircase and a double-fronted plan.
The exterior is two storeys plus an attic, with a four-window range. A top dentil brick cornice runs along the top. Recessed entrances are reached by three stone steps with iron handrails, each featuring a doorcase with an architrave, cornice, and dentilled pediment, leading to a six-fielded-panel door, with two glazed panels.
The house on the left (No. 20) has hipped bay windows with 1:3:1-light transomed glazing and iron opening panes to the returns. The house on the right (No. 18) has 19th-century canted bays with a frieze and cornice, featuring horned sash windows. The first floor has segmental-headed windows; two on the left have 20th-century uPVC frames, and two on the right have four-pane top-hung casements (replacing 2/2 sashes), with 20th-century shutters. There are four dormers, two with hipped roofs on the left, and two gabled, all with two-light casements.
The rear of the property includes a two-storey wing and two gabled dormers on the left; a 20th-century dormer is on the right, above a single-storey wing. This wing features a return window with a three-light, small-paned casement with an iron opening casement.
The interior was not inspected. No. 20 was not previously listed.
