Description

The Black Swan is a public house located on High Street in Henley-in-Arden. It dates from the early 17th century and 19th century, with some later alterations. The left part of the building features brick laid in Flemish bond, a pebbledash ground floor, and some timber framing, topped with a gabled Welsh slate roof and three brick stacks at the rear. It has an L-plan layout. The right part is timber-framed with painted roughcast infill, an old tile gabled roof, and a brick stack at the rear of the ridge as well as an end stack, arranged in a two-unit plan.

On the exterior, the left part has two storeys and a three-window range, with a plain fascia. A throughway to the left has a renewed 20th-century brick surround. The entrance, located to the right of centre, features a moulded surround, an overlight with decorative glazing bars, and a 20th-century half-glazed door. This entrance is flanked by canted bay windows with 4/4:8/8:4/4 sashes. The first-floor windows have sills and rusticated wedge lintels with key blocks above the 8/8 sashes. There is also a sign bracket. A 19th-century rear wing has 20th-century brick extensions. Fragmentary remains of 17th-century square framing with brick infill can be seen on the right inner return of the throughway.

The right part has two storeys and a two-window range. The entrance, located to the right of centre, has casements. The first floor features two windows with two-light, partly 20th-century, small-paned casements. There is square framing with bracing visible in the attic. The interior has not been inspected.
