Description
10 Guildhall Street is a house located in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 18th century, with an earlier timber-framed core. The building is constructed of red brick laid in English Bond, with remnants of red coloring, featuring a parapet and a brick dentil cornice, topped by a tiled roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys, attics, and a cellar. Vertical bands of slightly lighter brick outline the windows, which include a three-window range with sash windows: 12-pane windows on the first storey and unglazed windows on the ground storey, all in flush cased frames with flat gauged arches. There are two segmental-headed dormers with sliding two-light small-paned casements. The entrance features a four-panel door set in plain reveals, topped by a rectangular fanlight. The property also includes a two-storey rear range.
Inside, the cellar has a double front wall that indicates the line of an underbuilt jetty, with a heavy timber ceiling featuring widely spaced unchamfered lodged joists and chamfered main beams, along with walls made of brick, flint, and reused stone. Few features are exposed inside, but there is a single main beam with a wide chamfer in the front range, and a rear room that has a moulded stucco cornice with egg-and-dart ornament. The rear range contains narrow late-17th century main beams and some widely spaced studding along the upper north wall, with the end bay possibly being an extension.
