Description

No. 85 Guildhall Street is a house from the early 19th century, now functioning as a dental surgery. It features a white brick exterior and a slate roof, with a plain parapet that has stone coping and a raised stone band. The building stands three storeys tall and includes cellars. The front has a three-window range with 12-pane sash windows set in plain reveals, wide flat gauged arches, and projecting stone sills. The entrance is recessed, featuring a door with six sunk panels and moulded surrounds within a brick segmental-arched doorway supported by fluted columns, topped with a fanlight that has intersecting glazing bars. At the rear, there is a long two-storey range with 16-pane sash windows in flush cased frames and segmental arches.

Inside, the property has been significantly modernised and extended. A small front cellar has brick and rubble walls with old render, while a rear cellar features a segmental vaulted ceiling made of old red brick. The original staircase, which has been much restored, leads up to the attics. The front windows are fitted with panelled internal shutters. The two upper front rooms contain mid to late 19th-century marble fireplace surrounds and plaster cornices, one of which is moulded on the right and the other decorated with a floral and leaf design on the left; both rooms have been extensively subdivided. The top storey includes several six-panel doors with raised fielded panels.
