Description
No. 1 Guildhall Street is a shop located in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof. It stands two storeys high with a cellar, positioned on a corner site.
The exterior features two sash windows on the first storey, set in flush cased frames with glazing bars only in the upper sashes. The ground storey showcases a shop front that includes a continuous cornice and fascia, with shop windows divided into eight lights by heavy vertical glazing bars. The shop extends into part of the adjacent building to the south, No. 2 Guildhall Street, which is not included in the listing and also occupies the room above the shop.
Inside, there is a 19th-century cellar that is brick-lined, featuring a row of arched openings on the west side that run beneath the pavement. There are no indications of earlier features in the rest of the building.
