Description

87 Guildhall Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the mid-19th century, although it retains parts of a 17th-century rear section. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with a wooden cornice decorated with modillions.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar, with a four-window arrangement. All windows are sashes with single vertical glazing bars, set in plain reveals. They have stucco flat arches with keystones and projecting stone sills. A raised stucco band runs along the first-storey window-sill level. The entrance features a semicircular doorway with a recessed inner arch, both of which are moulded, and plain reveals. There are footscrapers on either side of the doorway. The front door is four-panelled, with the top two panels sunk and surrounded by applied mouldings, topped by a plain fanlight.

Inside, there is a small cellar mainly from the 19th century beneath part of the front. The main part of the house appears to be entirely from the 19th century, with a winder stair leading to the attic, featuring stick balusters, a wreathed handrail, and unusually large newel posts. To the right of the entrance, remnants of plaster ceiling decoration can be seen in a now-divided room. On the upper storey, both the front and rear rooms have walls with raised wood surrounds framing plaster panels. At the back, there is a high single-storey room with an ornate plaster cornice and a central ceiling piece. Additionally, a narrow 17th-century timber-framed wing at the rear is surrounded by 20th-century extensions, but it retains one exposed ovolo-moulded main beam on the ground floor.
